Prayer Times in Timor-Leste Today

Timor-Leste is one of Asia's most Catholic nations, yet Dili's Kampung Alor district has held a small, settled Muslim community descended from Arab and Javanese traders for well over a century.

A small, old community in Asia's newest Catholic-majority state

Long before Timor-Leste existed as a country, Arab merchants from Hadhramaut in Yemen were trading sandalwood, honey and slaves through the island on routes linking Java and Sulawesi to China and India, and by the late 19th century some had settled permanently around what is now Dili. Their descendants, together with Muslim traders of Javanese and Indian descent, remain concentrated in the Kampung Alor neighbourhood of West Dili, where the country's oldest mosque was completed in 1955 — built, notably, with materials supplied by the local Catholic bishop as a gesture of interfaith goodwill that has largely defined relations between the two communities since.

That relationship was tested during the violence of 1999 and again in 2006, when mosques in Dili sheltered refugees of all backgrounds and received UN peacekeeping protection alongside churches. Timor-Leste is compact enough — plus the separate Oecusse exclave to the west — that Dili's coordinates broadly represent the mainland, but this page still calculates times specifically for your chosen location rather than assuming one schedule fits every district.

Why the Muslim World League method

As a young nation (independent only since 2002) without an established national fatwa body for prayer timing, Timor-Leste's small Muslim community generally follows the Muslim World League's widely used angles, which suit its near-equatorial position around 8.5° south just as well as they suit nearby Indonesia.

Frequently asked

Why is there a mosque so close to Dili's cathedral district?

Kampung Alor's mosque and Dili's main Catholic churches have coexisted for generations; the mosque's construction in 1955 was aided by the Catholic bishop of the time, and the two communities have maintained visibly cordial relations, including reciprocal visits during major holidays, ever since.

Does the Oecusse exclave use the same prayer times as Dili?

Oecusse lies within Indonesian West Timor territory but is administered by Timor-Leste and keeps the same Asia/Dili time zone, so while its exact coordinates differ slightly from the capital, its calculated prayer times stay very close to Dili's.

How does Ramadan in Timor-Leste compare with nearby Indonesia?

Very similarly — Dili sits at almost the same latitude as eastern Indonesian cities like Kupang, so daily fasting hours during Ramadan are nearly identical between the two, generally around 12 to 13 hours with little seasonal variation.

Is Timor-Leste's Muslim community growing or shrinking?

It has stayed small and stable rather than growing rapidly — 2015 census figures put the national Muslim population at under 3,000 people, the great majority tracing their ancestry to the historic Arab and Javanese trading families rather than recent migration.
