From Northland to Southland: a community spread the length of two islands

New Zealand's Muslim history goes back further than most people expect: an Indian family had settled in Christchurch by the 1850s, and Chinese Muslim gold-diggers were working Otago's goldfields in the 1870s. Numbers stayed small for a century — barely 800 people by 1971 — before Indo-Fijian arrivals from the 1970s onward, professional migrants after Fiji's 1987 coup, and refugee resettlement from Somalia, Bosnia, Afghanistan and Iraq in the 1990s built the far larger and more diverse community that exists today, concentrated in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Hamilton. That history includes the tragedy of 15 March 2019, when a gunman attacked two Christchurch mosques; the outpouring of national grief and support that followed, including the tens of thousands who gathered for prayer a week later, is remembered as a defining moment of solidarity for the community.

New Zealand also stretches roughly 1,600 kilometres from Northland to Southland, so a single set of prayer times for one city does not describe the whole country: Wellington, near the middle, sits noticeably closer to the sun's low winter path than Auckland further north, while towns further south again see even shorter winter days and longer summer ones — all reasons this page calculates times for the specific place you choose.

Why the Muslim World League method

New Zealand's mosques generally follow the Muslim World League's standard angles, a sensible default for a country at temperate mid-latitudes (around 35–47° south) where day length varies substantially between summer and winter but never reaches the extreme white-night conditions seen much closer to the poles.

Frequently asked

Does Ramadan fall in summer or winter in New Zealand?

It depends on the year, just as anywhere — but because New Zealand is in the Southern Hemisphere, its long summer days (and shorter winter fasts) fall opposite to the Northern Hemisphere pattern many Muslims are used to, so a Ramadan that means short fasts in the Middle East can mean long ones in Auckland, and vice versa.

How much do Auckland and Wellington prayer times differ?

Wellington sits about 2.5° further south than Auckland, so on the same day its sunrise and sunset — and the Fajr, Maghrib and Isha times calculated from them — can differ by ten minutes or more, with the gap widening in the depths of winter.

Does New Zealand's daylight saving time affect the times shown here?

Yes — New Zealand shifts clocks forward in late September and back in early April, so calculated prayer times shift by an hour on the local clock at those changeovers even though the sun's actual position hasn't changed.

Are the Christchurch mosques still active places of worship today?

Yes — Al Noor Mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre, the two mosques attacked in 2019, were both rebuilt and remain active centres of prayer and community life in Christchurch today.
